Former West Indies captain and senior all-rounder Jason Holder (Jason Holder) believes that the International Cricket Council (ICC) and cricket boards around the world will have to fix a window for Test cricket in a year so that they can keep all their players available for selection.

Jason Holder has given this statement after his decision not to participate in the ongoing two-match Test series against Australia to participate in the International League T-20 (ILT20) 2024. He is part of Dubai Capitals (DC), owned by Delhi Capitals owner GMR Group, in ILT20 2024.

Talking about his decision not to go on Australia tour, Jason Holder said that after long discussions with Cricket West Indies (CWI) he decided to play in ILT20 2024, but it does not mean that He will not play test cricket anymore.

I am not turning my back on Test cricket: Jason Holder

Jason Holder was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying: “You don’t want to choose between international cricket and franchise cricket. But I took this decision after long discussions with Cricket West Indies. Unfortunately we had no other option. From discussions with Cricket West Indies, it was very clear that I needed to be available for the T20I series in Australia, especially considering the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

But this does not mean that I am turning my back on Test cricket. It is still my favorite format and I will definitely be available for Test matches in future as well. But right now I just wanted to make sure that I give myself the best opportunity to prepare for the T20 World Cup.”

‘Cricket can be played in football model’

On the future of Test cricket, Jason Holder said: “The only way to save Test cricket is that you have a window for Test cricket in a year so that you can keep your best players available. But more importantly, you need to pay your Test players the right salaries. In this matter, Australia and India are at the top, while all the other teams are at the bottom.

So, when you are faced with a dilemma where you can play a Test series for X amount and a franchise for three times the amount, your players will opt for earning more money. If we create a model where you are given a fair salary for Test matches, and not below that fixed salary, then the players will happily say, ‘Okay, look, it is beneficial for me to play Test cricket. ‘ I think, perhaps, cricket can be played in the football model, where you have an international and a franchise window. Maybe it could be a model, but who knows?”
