Australia wants to hold indoor tests in Tasmania, so they have proposed an indoor cricket stadium in Hobart. Actually, Tasmania’s football team ‘Tasmania Devils’ is entering the Australian Football League (AFL) from 2028 and for this, the Tasmanian government wants to build a 23000-seat multi-sports stadium, where football as well as cricket can be played.
A transparent roof will also be installed here so that T20 matches can be played during the day and night and no player faces any kind of problem. If this happens, Hobart will be the first stadium in the world where indoor test cricket can also be played. Anne Beach, CEO of Macari Point Development Corporation, also said that their entire focus is on red ball cricket.
Anne Beach, CEO of Mackie Point Development Corporation, told SEN Tassie, “We want Test cricket here and that is our entire focus. The challenge is that we have to constantly work with Cricket Australia and Cricket Tasmania based on the details and design given by the ICC. We will not get recognition until this stadium is built. We are constantly doing workshops with Cricket Australia to ensure that the stadium is being built as per the design. We have to have red ball cricket here.”
The height of this stadium is a matter of concern: Alistair Richardson
Alistair Richardson, CEO of Cox Architecture, said, ‘The biggest concern in the construction of a cricket stadium is the height of the stadium. This was also a concern in the construction of Melbourne’s indoor Marvel Stadium and there the ball could touch the roof. Therefore, we have resorted to Hawk-Eye and ball-tracking technology to estimate the maximum height of the ball. This is challenging as well as fun. We are happy to increase the height of the roof to 50 meters because till now there have been no examples of hitting a ball at a height of more than 50 meters.’
Former Australian player and Cricket Tasmania President David Boon said, ‘This is a great opportunity for Tasmania. We want to play cricket in this stadium. The design will also be finalized in the coming few months.’
