Karn Sharma made his Test debut under the captaincy of Virat Kohli during India’s tour of Australia in 2014-15. This was also the only Test match of the spinner’s career. Recently, Karn Sharma shared a memorable story from the first Test of the series in Adelaide.

The first Test match of the series in the 2014-15 Australia tour was also Virat Kohli’s first match as captain. Australia declared their second innings at 290 runs and India got a huge target of 363 runs. Karn Sharma, who was part of the dressing room, said that captain Virat Kohli’s goal was to win rather than draw.

While talking on Manjot Kalra’s YouTube channel, Karan Sharma said,

We were chasing more than 300 runs in that match and Virat said no draw, we will chase it. This brought a lot of positivity among many players in the dressing room, it was a different approach. Different captains have different approaches. But his words gave a great signal to the players in the dressing room, that your captain has a different plan.

While chasing the target against Australia, India lost 2 wickets at a score of 57. After which the partnership of Virat and Murali Vijay brought the team back. There was a partnership of 185 runs for the third wicket between the two batsmen.

Kohli had brought the team close to victory by playing a brilliant innings of 141 runs in 175 balls. But then the next four wickets fell in a span of 62 runs. Murali Vijay’s innings of 99 runs could not save Team India from a 48-run defeat.

Karna further said,

He (Virat Kohli) always gave the impression that everything was fine. Through his preparations, fitness and mental approach, Kohli never seemed to be upset or bothered by the fact that he had a bad Test series.
