India lost the first Test against South Africa at the SuperSport Park, Centurion by an innings and 32 runs to go down 0-1 in the two-match series. In response to South Africa’s mammoth score of 408 runs, thanks to a brilliant century by Dean Elgar (185) in the first innings, the Rohit Sharma-led team could only score 245 and 131 runs in both the innings.
After India’s defeat, Team India’s wicketkeeper batsman Dinesh Karthik strongly criticized the pair of Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna, who failed to provide any assistance to Jasprit Bumrah in bowling during the match. Commenting on his performance, Karthik said that Thakur was in the last series in South Africa as well but despite this, he had an ordinary performance this time.
Rohit Sharma was very kind towards Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna – Dinesh Karthik
Speaking on a Cricbuzz show, Dinesh Karthik said, “Shardul and Prasidh definitely need to improve their game. Rohit was very kind to him when he said that he is a young bowler. But Shardul was in the last series also. He performed very well. But this time it was a very normal performance.
Prasidh Krishna is a young bowler and this shows that he does not have much first-class experience. He was giving more than one boundary ball. There was no control there and that is never a good sign in Test cricket.
He further said that India missed Mohammed Shami, who has been ruled out of the series due to an ankle injury. He further named Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar who worked brilliantly as the second or third seamer.
Karthik further said, “In the last few years, India has prided itself on how good its bowling attack has been. But you can see that without Mohammed Shami, this Indian attack is not what it used to be. Before this, we had Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar. “They gave us the least continuity and that was largely lacking today.”
