We have seen this time and again in this series where Sri Lanka have lost two set batsmen in quick succession.
The second match of the 3-match ODI series between India and Sri Lanka was played on August 4. Team India did not make any changes in its playing 11 for this match. However, Sri Lanka had to make some changes in its playing 11.
Talking about the match, after winning the toss, the Sri Lankan captain decided to bat first. Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando opened the innings for Sri Lanka. Mohammed Siraj bowled the first over for India. Siraj got Pathum Nissanka caught by KL Rahul on the very first ball of the over and gave a big blow to Sri Lanka.
Kusal Mendis-Avishka Fernando were hunted by Washington Sundar
After the loss of the first wicket, Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando were batting sensibly and a 74-run partnership had been formed between the two which needed to be broken. At this time captain Rohit brought Washington Sundar into the attack.
Washington Sundar sent Avishka Fernando to the pavilion on the last ball of his second and 17th over of the innings. Sundar caught him on his own ball. Fernando was out after scoring 40 runs off 62 balls.
After that, in the very next over, Sundar gave India its third success. Mendis was out on the very first ball of the 19th over. Sundar’s ball hit his pad and the umpire raised his finger to declare him out on the LBW appeal. After this, Mendis talked to his fellow batsman but then went back with a sad face.
Sundar bowled a full length ball which the batsman tried to sweep and missed it completely. This was a big wicket for India as Mendis was another set batsman like Avishka who would have proved lethal for India.
