The ICC Annual Conference will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on July 19. The most important decision to be taken in this annual meeting is whether the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Jay Shah, will be appointed as the new ICC President in place of New Zealand’s Greg Barclay or not?

Let us tell you, this conference will start with the board meeting on July 19. The UAE hosted the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 matches and a loss of more than $20 million is feared there. The financial details of the event have not been included in the 9-point agenda of the AGM. However, the board will discuss this in the form of a ‘post-incident report’ which is standard operating procedure.

ICC sources revealed that, ‘Nothing can be said about this right now as Jay Shah still has 1 year left as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. According to the rules, Jay Shah has to complete this term. However, if Jay Shah’s term as ICC President starts in 2025, then Barclay will not be able to complete his third term of 2 years which is from December 2024 to December 2026.

There is also a school of thought that if the tenure of ICC President is changed from three terms of 2 years to two terms of 3 years, then it could last up to 6 years.

So will Jay Shah be the next President of the International Cricket Council?

It is believed that if Barclay’s current term becomes three years, Shah can remain as BCCI secretary for six years and can assume the post of ICC chairman for three years in 2025. After this term, he can return in 2028 and assume the post of board president.

Barclay has been the ICC chairman since November 2020 when he received 11 out of 16 votes in the second round of voting and beat another contender Imran Khawaja. Meanwhile, 35-year-old Shah is in line to become the youngest leader of the global organisation.
