Afghanistan lost in the semi-finals and their dream of playing in the final was shattered, but they will be very proud of their team’s performance throughout the tournament.
The first semi-final match of the T20 World Cup 2024 was played between South Africa and Afghanistan on 27 June at 6 am. South Africa defeated Afghanistan to enter the T20 World Cup final for the first time in their history.
The first semi-final match of this year’s World Cup was played between South Africa and Afghanistan at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Trinidad. With this, Afghanistan team’s dream of playing the World Cup final for the first time remained unfulfilled. South Africa won this match by 9 wickets.
Afghanistan team could not withstand the pressure
Let us tell you that Afghanistan was all out for 56 runs while batting first. In reply, South Africa achieved the target of 57 runs in 8.5 overs. For South Africa, Reeza Hendricks returned unbeaten after scoring 29 runs and captain Aiden Markram returned unbeaten after scoring 23 runs. Fazalhaq Farooqi took the only wicket for Afghanistan.
The only batsman from Afghanistan to reach double figures was Azmatullah Umarzai who scored 10 runs. No other batsman could cross the double-digit mark. For South Africa, Marco Johnson and Tabrez Shamsi took 3-3 wickets while Anrich Norkhia and Kagiso Rabada took two wickets each.
Afghanistan’s performance in T20 World Cup 2024
Even though Afghanistan lost in the semi-finals and their dream of playing in the final was dashed, they will be very proud of their team’s performance throughout the tournament. Afghanistan caught the attention of the cricket world with their performance during the T20 World Cup 2024. They finished the competition as the second-best Asian team after India and ahead of Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Afghanistan also won against New Zealand in the group stage and Australia during the Super 8s to knock the 2021 champions out of the competition. Afghanistan’s next big tournament will be the Champions Trophy next year.
Rashid Khan made a promise to the fans
After the semi-final defeat, captain Rashid Khan posted a post on social media praising his and his teammates’ efforts. The Afghan captain said the team will always remember the T20 World Cup and thanked his teammates for their fight.
Along with this, Rashid Khan promised the fans that he will continue his performance in the upcoming tournaments to be played in the future. The star spinner also thanked the fans for believing in the team and inspiring them to fight during the T20 World Cup.
