As per Articles 1.7.7.4.1 and 1.8.1 of the Code, Sri Lanka Cricket and the ICC have agreed that the ICC will take action in relation to the international match schedule as well as the Lanka Premier League fees.
Sri Lanka defeated India by 110 runs in the third and final ODI match played on 7 August and won the three-match ODI series 2-0. All the players from Sri Lanka performed very well in this ODI series. However, after the end of this series, the Sri Lankan team has suffered a major setback. The International Cricket Council has accused young spinner Praveen Jayawickrama of violating the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.
Let us tell you, Praveen Jayawickrama was asked by a corrupt person to contact another player for fixing in the 2021 Lanka Premier League. But he did not inform the Anti-Corruption Unit about this. Apart from this, he also obstructed the investigation of the Anti-Corruption Unit, due to which the ICC has taken this action.
The charges against him are based on clauses 2.4.4 and 2.4.7 of the Code. In accordance with clauses 1.7.7.4.1 and 1.8.1 of the Code, Sri Lanka Cricket and the ICC have agreed that the ICC will take action in relation to the Lanka Premier League fees along with the international match schedule.
The young spinner has a total of 14 days to respond to the allegations, starting from August 6. The ICC will not make any further comment regarding these allegations at this stage.
Praveen Jayavikrama’s performance has been quite good in international cricket
Let us tell you, Praveen Jayawickrama has participated in all three formats for Sri Lanka. He has taken 25 wickets in five Tests for the national team, while the best player has 5 wickets in five ODIs. Praveen Jayawickrama has taken 2 wickets in 5 T20 matches. He played his last match for Sri Lanka in May 2022.
After the recently concluded ODI series against India, Sri Lanka’s head coach Sanath Jayasuriya said, ‘This wait was very long because I scored a lot of runs in the series I participated in in 1997. That was the last series against India in which we won. After 27 years, I am a part of this team and I am very happy that our players performed very well in it. These players are really strong and also very talented. I am very proud of them.’
