Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane will launch a sports academy in Mumbai.
The Maharashtra Cabinet on Monday approved the lease of 2,000 square metres of land to veteran batsman Ajinkya Rahane to develop a world-class sports complex in Mumbai’s posh Bandra area.
Ajinkya Rahane has given this information by sharing a post on Instagram. Let us tell you that in 1988, this plot was given to the great cricketer Sunil Gavaskar to set up an indoor training academy.
Why did the government take away the plot from Sunil Gavaskar?
A cabinet note said that Gavaskar was first allotted the plot 36 years ago to develop an indoor cricket training academy. The government took back the plot due to lack of development. The government has said that the condition of the plot is bad as slum dwellers are using the plot for wrong purposes.
Ajinkya Rahane thanked the government
Thank you Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri @mieknathshinde ji, Deputy CMs Shri @Dev_Fadnavis ji and sir @AjitPawarSpeaks ji and Mr. @ShelarAshish ji, Treasurer BCCI, for supporting my vision of a world-class cricket academy & sports facility in Mumbai.

Ajinkya Rahane got land on lease for 30 years
The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the Revenue Department’s proposal to give land on a 30-year lease to cricketer Ajinkya Madhukar Rahane to develop a modern sports facility, an official said. The proposal to lease the plot to Rahane was approved by MHADA (Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority), which was approved by the Council of Ministers. The plot given to the ‘Sunil Gavaskar Cricket Foundation Trust’ was returned to the state government in May 2022.
Despite prime location, the academy was not built
In 2021, Maharashtra Government Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad revealed that Sunil Gavaskar has not done any work for the academy. Despite having a prime location, no good cricket academy has been built there.
Sunil Gavaskar is one of the greatest cricketers of Team India. He scored 10122 and 3092 runs respectively in 125 Tests and 108 ODIs for India. For a long time, Gavaskar held the record for scoring the most centuries in Tests (34), which was later broken by Sachin Tendulkar.
