Andre Russell wants to play T20 World Cup 2026: West Indies international cricketer Andre Russell recently expressed his desire to participate in the T20 World Cup to be held in 2026. This tournament will be jointly organized by India and Sri Lanka.
The 36-year-old Russell was considering retiring from international cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup but revealed that he changed his decision after a conversation with West Indies head coach Darren Sammy and will now prepare his body for the next mega tournament.
Russell is one of the biggest names in T20 cricket. He has scored 1033 runs at a strike rate of 163.70 and taken 60 wickets in 82 T20 Internationals for the West Indies. Talking about continuing his international career for the West Indies, Russell said that the Caribbean team has a lot of talent, but he wants to inspire the young players so that they can become even better and fight for their place in the team.
Why should I retire: Andre Russell
Speaking to Jamaica Gleaner, Russell said, “I spoke to Sammy and he told me that he wants me to play international cricket for a few more years. Seeing the talent in the Caribbean team, I think I will push my body more and play international cricket for the next two years.”
Russell further said, “I definitely want to play in the 2026 World Cup because I have a lot of talent that can come out. I could have retired from international cricket, but I want to see how the young all-rounders perform. I can still hit the ball anywhere, bowl at a good pace, am still fit and can run in the field. I don’t think I should stop now.”
Andre Russell’s current status
Currently, Andre Russell is playing for Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). His team has won five out of eight matches so far and has qualified for the playoffs, which will start on October 1.
The Kieron Pollard-led side will next play against Barbados Royals and Guyana Amazon Warriors and if they win both the matches, they will secure their place in the top two, giving them two chances to qualify for the final.
