By taking five wickets, Ashwin has broken the record of Australia’s star spinner Nathan Lyon for taking the most five-wicket hauls in the history of the World Test Championship (WTC).
In the first Test match played between India and Bangladesh, the Bangla Tigers had to face defeat by 280 runs. Ravichandran proved to be the star player of this match. He scored a century in India’s first innings and in the fourth innings of the match, he wreaked havoc on Bangladesh with the ball.
Ashwin sent half of Bangladesh’s team back to the pavilion with his spin attack in the fourth innings of the match. In 43 matches for Australia, Lyon has taken five wickets 10 times, while Ashwin now holds the record of taking 11 five-wicket hauls in 36 WTC matches for India.

The record for most five-wicket hauls in Test cricket is held by Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, who has dismissed five or more batsmen in an innings 67 times for Sri Lanka.

In the Chennai Test, Ashwin also broke the record of 519 wickets of former West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh and became the eighth highest wicket-taker in the history of Test cricket. The Indian legend has taken 521 wickets in 101 matches played so far.
Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan holds the record for taking the most wickets in Test cricket. This legendary spinner finished his Test career with 800 wickets in 133 matches. Australia’s Shane Warne is second with 708 wickets in 145 Tests, followed by England’s James Anderson (704), India’s Anil Kumble (619), England’s Stuart Broad (604), Australia’s Glenn McGrath (563) and Nathan Lyon (530).
