In the T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan will play its first match against USA on 6 June.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam resigned from the captaincy of all three formats after the team’s poor performance in the ODI World Cup 2023. After which Shaheen Afridi was handed over the captaincy of white ball cricket. But the team’s performance was not very good. And then before the T20 World Cup 2024, Babar Azam has been handed over the captaincy again. The team will play its first match in the tournament against USA on June 6. Meanwhile, before the match, Babar Azam has made a big statement about his career and the team during a special conversation with AB de Villiers.
I am just playing my game- Babar Azam
Babar Azam, while talking on AB de Villiers’ YouTube channel, said, ‘I am just taking one day at a time, I am not thinking about where I am going, or at what age I will stop myself. Right now, I am just playing my game and enjoying every moment. I just love playing cricket. Yes, we are playing the World Cup, and the expectations are very high. The confidence is also very high and we have a good team, we have good players. Good batsmen and senior players have come forward and that has helped a lot. We are very excited for the World Cup.
Pakistan won the last T20 World Cup in 2009 under the captaincy of Younis Khan. The team has reached the semi-finals of the last two editions, but could not win the trophy. This year, the Pak team would like to play brilliantly to win the second T20 World Cup title under the captaincy of Babar Azam. Before the start of the tournament, Pakistan played a T20 series against England, in which the team lost 2-0.
We were not a rich family- Babar Azam
Babar Azam also revealed during a conversation with AB de Villiers that he had to struggle a lot to reach the position he is in today. Babar further said, ‘My family played a big role in this, because when I started we didn’t have a lot of money, we were not a rich family. I started playing state cricket and every Saturday night I used to play tennis ball cricket and tape-ball cricket. We used to have 2 teams and play together. After some time, I told my father that I want to start professional cricket, he said okay. When I started my professional cricket it was very difficult.
Babar Azam is the second batsman to score 4000 runs in T20 after Virat Kohli. Virat Kohli has completed the mark of 4000 runs in 117 innings and Babar Azam in 119 innings. Babar Azam’s performance in the T20 World Cup 2024 is going to be very important for the team.
