Cricket Highlights, On This Day: What happened in the history of cricket on 12 October?
1911: On this day, Vijay Merchant, India’s biggest name in domestic cricket, was born in Bombay. Fans know about Don Bradman, but Merchant was as tall as the Australian great. He played only ten Tests in his career, all against England, before a shoulder injury forced his retirement. But in first-class cricket, he was second only to Bradman with an average of 71.64. His average in Ranji Trophy was 98.75. He played 150 first-class matches and scored 13470 runs at an average of 71.64, which included 45 centuries and 52 half-centuries. Merchant died at the age of 76.
1968: Former English batsman Ken Barrington suffered a heart attack during the World Double-Wicket Championship at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Due to this his first-class career ended.
2002: On this day, one of the shortest Test matches came to an end. This was a match played between Pakistan and Australia in Sharjah. Australia scored 310 runs in its first innings. Pakistan’s performance was very poor, they were all out twice for 59 and 53 runs. He played 31.5 overs in the first innings and 24.5 overs in the second innings. Only three batsmen scored in double digits in the two innings.
2019: Barbados Tridents defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final of CPL 2019, ending Guyana’s 11-match winning streak. Barbados scored 171/6 in the first innings and became champions after restricting Guyana to 144/9.
