Cricket Highlights, On This Day: What happened in the history of cricket on 8 October?
1969: India had to face defeat against New Zealand in Nagpur due to the lethal bowling of Kiwi spinners.
India had a target of 277 runs with more than four sessions left in the game. But New Zealand took only 40 minutes to bowl out India on the fifth day. Spinner Hadley Howarth took 5/34 and Vic Pollard took 3/21 as India were bowled out for 109 in 55.5 overs.
Pakistani player Fawad Alam was born
Pakistan’s star middle order batsman Fawad Alam was born on October 8, 1985. This left-handed batsman started his career by getting out for zero on the first ball in the ODI against Sri Lanka. But then he scored 168 runs on his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2009. However, it took ten years for Alam to return to the Test team in 2020 and in the meantime he missed 88 Test matches. He has played 19 Tests and 38 ODIs so far and scored 1011 and 966 runs respectively.
Start of the fourth edition of the World Cup
On October 8, 1987, the fourth edition of the World Cup started with the match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Hyderabad. Pakistan won this match by 15 runs and Javed Miandad scored a century in the first innings. He scored 103 runs in 100 balls with the help of six fours and completed 4000 ODI runs in his career. Pakistan scored 267/6 and won the match by bowling out Sri Lanka for 252 runs.
