Smith is no longer Cricket Australia’s first choice in T20 format
Australia cricket team’s experienced batsman Steve Smith has been one of the best batsmen of modern day cricket. However, after making an impact in Test and ODI cricket, he has not been able to prove himself in the shortest format of the game i.e. T20 International cricket.
However, he was reinstated into Australia’s T20 squad after performing well in the Big Bash League 2022, and he also opened the batting in two matches during the T20 series against India in November 2023.
On the other hand, a big statement has come out from former England cricket team captain Michael Vaughan on his batting while opening. Vaughan says that he is just an opening batsman in his place in T20 cricket.
Michael Vaughn gave a big statement
Let us tell you that regarding Steve Smith’s batting in T20 format, Michael Vaughan quoted Fox Sports as saying – I think his place in this format is only in the opening. Because he can use his playing skills well in the first 6 overs.
He is a brilliant player, but if he doesn’t open then I don’t think he should play this format. If you have to play him, then make him bat in top 2, it will be very good for you. He can score 80 or 90 runs for you in 50 balls.
Vaughan further said – The advantage will be that if he (Smith) bats in the powerplay, there will be no pressure on the middle order. In this format, you need such players who keep hitting from 6 overs to 20 overs. But I think he is a brilliant player in the first six overs, because at that time there are only two players outside 30 yards.
