The first match of the 2-match Test series between India and Bangladesh has started on September 19. Former Indian batsman Sanjay Manjrekar is surprised by Rohit Sharma’s decision to leave out spinner Kuldeep Yadav for the first Test against Bangladesh at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Let us tell you that the Indian team has opted for a combination of three fast bowlers and two spinners for the first Test match in which Kuldeep is not there. The pitch and conditions usually demand three spinners. Always two experienced spinners – Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja retain their place, while either Kuldeep Yadav or Axar Patel plays as the third spinner. However, this time Team India did not prefer any secondary spinner as right-arm fast bowler Akash Deep has found a place in the team.

Kuldeep Yadav has been in and out of the Test team since his debut in 2017. After being dropped from the playing XI despite taking eight wickets in the series opener against Bangladesh in 2022, the spinner returned to the team for the home series against England in early 2024.

He played four consecutive matches and took 19 wickets in the series and also gave some useful performances in the lower order, due to which he can be considered a favorite over Axar Patel in terms of selection.

“In Indian conditions you can’t make a green pitch that is seam friendly. Indian batting has also had a bit of trouble on turning pitches and with three spinners, if Bangladesh bowl well India might find it a bit difficult to beat them,” Manjrekar told ESPNcricinfo ahead of the first Test.
