India head coach Gautam Gambhir revealed that there is no certainty yet whether Rohit Sharma will play in the first Test against Australia in Perth or not. He said that a decision will be taken in the next few days and if he does not play the Perth Test, then Bumrah will captain in his absence. Meanwhile, the 43-year-old also highlighted that if Rohit does not play then Abhimanyu Easwaran or KL Rahul could open.
In fact Both Easwaran and Rahul flopped with the bat in the practice match against Australia A in Melbourne. After which, there was discussion about Shubman Gill opening again, but Gambhir admitted that the team management had not discussed it. However, he indicated that the team management would give preference to someone senior.
Gambhir talked about Rahul’s experience and said that the playing eleven will be selected closer to the first Test. The Delhi-born player also revealed that the team is not focusing on the World Test Championship final and every series they play has great importance.
Gautam Gambhir gave a big statement regarding KL Rahul
Gautam Gambhir said in the press conference, “I am not considering the scenario of reaching the WTC final. Every series is important, regardless of what happened in the past. We are keen to go to Australia and do well. Abhimanyu Easwaran, KL Rahul are our options as Rohit’s replacement. “I will consider the best playing XI as the first Test approaches.”
He further said, “Sometimes you go with experienced players also. He can bat in the top order, middle order and also at number 6. He can keep wickets; If Rohit is not available for the first Test then he can open for us. How many teams have a player like KL Rahul who can open as well as play at number 5 or 6? KL Rahul is an experienced player.”
