An era has come to an end after Kane Williamson’s decision to step down from captaincy. None of the four Fab-4 players are captains now.
The 9th edition of the T20 World Cup is currently being played under the joint hosting of West Indies and USA. The first round of the tournament is over. The Super-8 round is starting today (19 June), after which the semi-finals will be played on 27 June and the final on 29 June.
For the first time in the history of the T20 World Cup, the New Zealand team has been eliminated from the tournament after the group stage round. With this, the team’s dream of winning the World Cup has been shattered once again. Meanwhile, Kane Williamson has announced to leave the captaincy of white ball cricket. He has also rejected the central contract offered by the board.
The entire cricket world is surprised by this decision of Kane Williamson. An era has come to an end today after this decision of Kane Williamson. None of the four players of Fab-4 is a captain now. The Fab-4 players include Steve Smith, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and Joe Root. These four players have waved their flag in every format while representing their respective countries.
Kane Williamson became the all-format captain of New Zealand in 2016
After the retirement of Brendon McCullum, Kane Williamson was appointed captain of all three formats of New Zealand in March 2016. Under the captaincy of Williamson, the team won its first ICC title in 2021 by defeating India in the World Test Championship. After which Kane Williamson left the captaincy of the Test format in December 2022 and has also left the captaincy of white ball cricket after the team was out of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Steve Smith became Australia’s all-format captain in 2015 after Michael Clarke. But then he had to step down from the captaincy after the ball-tampering scandal in 2018. England player Joe Root became the full-time Test format captain in 2017. But then he resigned in 2022 due to England’s poor performance.
Virat Kohli has captained India in all formats from 2014 to 2022. Kohli had announced to leave the captaincy of the T20 format after the T20 World Cup 2021. The board did not want two different captains in T20 and ODI formats. Due to which Kohli was removed from the ODI captaincy in December 2021 and Rohit Sharma was appointed captain. Virat Kohli then also left the captaincy of the Test format in January 2022.
