Youth are doing well and this is the right time- Shanaka
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had recently made a big announcement and informed that 32-year-old all-rounder player Dasun Shanaka will not be seen captaining the team. Shanaka was replaced by Kushal Mendis in ODI and Wanindu Hasaranga in T20. Whereas in the biggest format of the game i.e. Test cricket, Dimuth Karunaratne will be seen captaining the team.
On the other hand, now a big statement of Dasun Shanaka has come out regarding leaving the captaincy of Sri Lankan cricket team. Shanaka has pointed out how to prepare a young player for the upcoming Cricket World Cup. He has also said that whenever the young player needs anything, he will be seen helping him.
Dasun Shanaka gave a big statement
Let us tell you that Dasun Shanaka said on Cricbuzz – Young players are playing well at the moment. You know this is a good time to leave the captaincy, if he needs any support I am always there. If I give my opinion they will definitely listen. We need to prepare for the next World Cup. I personally think it was the right time for this change.
Shanaka further said about his captaincy – I was never meant to be a captain. I was never ready for it and you know how I got captaincy. But I was happy after that. Nobody knew whether he could become captain. I also did not expect to become the captain.
See, there was a time when no one had any interest in the Sri Lankan cricket team. We were losing to every team, so after this my plan was to create a core team, perform for the team and work as a unit. We wanted to attract the cricket community in Sri Lanka, to some extent we managed to do that.
