The former Team India captain could be retained in the uncapped slot as Mahendra Singh Dhoni has retired from international cricket in 2020. If Chennai Super Kings retains Dhoni under this rule then they will get Rs 4 crore instead of Rs 12 crore.

Know what is the retention rule?

Under this rule, a capped Indian player will become uncapped if he has not played in the starting eleven in international cricket in the five calendar years preceding the relevant season or does not have a central contract with the BCCI. This will be applicable only for Indian players.

Earlier, Mahendra Singh Dhoni had said about his return, ‘We will have to see what decision the board takes regarding the retention of players. The ball is not in our court at this time. So once the rules are announced I will take my decision then. It also has to be seen whether the team reposes confidence in me or not.
