This news was revealed by Mumbai Cricket Association president Sanjay Patil on Sunday, August 04. Patil said that making Ajinkya Rahane the captain when he is available is not an easy task. According to him, the team’s preparations for the upcoming domestic season are in full swing. They were busy in a two-week training camp at KSCA’s Alur facility “Three Ovals” located on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
Prithvi Shaw can also play Irani Cup
The upcoming Irani Cup may also see the return of top opener Prithvi Shaw, who is currently playing in the One-Day Cup for Northamptonshire in England. Veteran India and Mumbai cricketer Ajinkya Rahane is currently in England and is participating in the One-Day Cup with Leicestershire. Due to this commitment, Rahane will not be available to play in the Buchi Babu tournament.
In Rahane’s absence, the association’s senior selection committee has given the captaincy to Sarfaraz Khan. Shams Mulani, the vice-captain of the Ranji Trophy last season, will also not participate in the tournament. However, the all-rounder may return to the team for the Irani Cup.
Apart from being the captain, Sarfaraz is the only player to have played Test cricket in the announced team. Ranji season’s Player of the Tournament Tanush Kotian is also in the team. Meanwhile, Sarfaraz’s brother Mushir Khan is included in the 17-member squad.
