Virat Kohli has returned to T20I cricket after almost 14 months.
Virat Kohli has returned to T20I cricket after about 14 months. He played a useful inning of 29 runs in the second T20 match against Afghanistan in Indore. However, amid discussions about him opening, he came to bat at number 3. Many veterans believe that Kohli should open the innings with Rohit.
Now, South African veteran player AB de Villiers has advocated for Virat not to open. He believes that Virat Kohli has a good track record as an opening batsman in T-20 cricket, but still he would not want Kohli to open for India.
He also said that Kohli is perfect for number-3 due to his ability to play the role of anchor and build partnerships with middle-order batsmen.
‘Virat batting at number 3 was the biggest threat for us’
Speaking in his YouTube video, de Villiers said, I have a different opinion. For most of my international career, when we played against India, Virat batting at No. 3 was the biggest threat to us. I always felt that he was the pivot of the team in the middle order.
De Villiers further said, number-3 is not the middle order, but it is the top order. He is often associated with the middle order. Even with the tail batsmen. It is impossible to play against him.
“I am concerned about that position,” he said. However, the figures are not bad. When Virat plays as an opening batsman, his average is 23 and strike rate is 138. When he does not face the first ball and is at the non-striker’s end, he averages 140 and has a strike rate of 173.
