Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes that his compatriot and former teammate Jason Gillespie will do a good job as Pakistan’s red ball coach (Test coach). Ricky Ponting and Gillespie have played a lot of cricket together for Australia before and they have a very good friendship.

Ponting highlighted Gillespie’s impressive record as a coach and compared it to India head coach Gautam Gambhir, who has also tasted success in his brief coaching career so far. Gambhir recently won the IPL 2024 title in his only season as Kolkata Knight Riders mentor.

Here is what Ricky Ponting said about Jason Gillespie while speaking on the ICC review:

“Jason Gillespie is a bit like Gautam Gambhir. He has had a very good coaching record wherever he has gone. I have no doubt he will face some challenges. But he is a deep thinker and as I said, he is a calm guy who does things his way.”

Ponting has no doubt that Gillespie will find a way to get the best out of the Pakistani players.

I am not surprised by the changes in Pakistan cricket: Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting further said that he is not surprised by the massive changes in the Pakistan team after the disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup. Let us tell you that Pakistan was eliminated even before reaching the Super 8 stage of the tournament due to defeat against India and America in its group. On this Ponting said-

“We are all old guys who have played together, we all have a WhatsApp group. Everyone congratulated him (Gillespie) on that and wished him all the best for that role as coach. To be honest, I am not surprised at all by so many changes happening in this Pakistan team. I know it is a different format, but they had a very disappointing T20 World Cup. If you are not willing to make some changes, you are expecting similar results.”
