Vinesh Phogat is the 2024 Paris Olympics winner Seeing the way India’s star female wrestler Vinesh Phogat won three matches one after the other and made it to the finals on 7 August in the Paris Olympics, everyone believed that Vinesh would definitely bring a gold medal for her country. But this dream of Vinesh Phogat as well as crores of Indians has been shattered. Vinesh Phogat had made it to the finals by winning all her three matches in the women’s 50 kg category on Tuesday.
During this time, Vinesh also defeated Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Susaki. Meanwhile, on Wednesday morning, news came that Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified. This means that she has been declared ineligible to play in the final match. Vinesh Phogat’s weight was 100 grams more than the prescribed weight and due to this she was disqualified.
Hearing this news, millions of Indian fans including Vinesh were disappointed. Actually, according to the rules regarding weighing, the wrestler’s weight is taken on the day when he has to fight. The matches of every weight category are held within two days, so the wrestlers who reach the final or repechage have to get weighed on both days. The wrestler has 30 minutes for the first time while getting weighed.
They can weigh themselves as many times as they want within 30 minutes. During this time, it is also checked that the wrestler does not have any infectious disease and his nails are cut very short. Wrestlers who have to compete for the second consecutive day are given 15 minutes to weigh themselves.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed that Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified due to being overweight. The association said, “The Indian team is saddened to report that Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the 50 kg category of women’s wrestling. Despite the best efforts made by the team overnight, this morning her weight was a few grams more than 50 kg. There will be no further comment by the team at this time. The Indian team requests you to respect Vinesh’s privacy. She would like to focus on the current competitions.”

A few meters, seconds, or grams can mean the difference between a nation celebrating you or forgetting you in a week, making you a symbol of sympathy. Athletes don’t need that, they need respect. We must change our mindset towards sporting losses. #respect
