Sourav Ganguly appointed Rohit Sharma as the captain in 2021 after Virat Kohli.
In 2021, when Virat Kohli left the captaincy of India’s T20I format, the then current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly appointed Rohit Sharma as the captain of all three formats. Ganguly’s decision was also criticized a lot by the fans. Meanwhile, former India captain and President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Sourav Ganguly has taken a dig at his critics.
Speaking to Bengali daily ‘Aajkal’, Ganguly hit back at his critics who criticised him for appointing Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian team. Ganguly had decided to appoint Rohit Sharma as the captain after Virat Kohli was forced to step down from all formats of the game following India’s group-stage exit from the T20 World Cup 2021.
Sourav Ganguly gave a befitting reply to his critics
Sourav Ganguly said, “When I handed over the captaincy of the Indian team to Rohit Sharma, everyone criticized me. Now that India has won the T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, everyone has stopped abusing me for it. In fact, I think everyone has forgotten that it was me who appointed him as the captain of the Indian team.”
India’s performance under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy has been excellent. Under his captaincy, the team reached the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup. In the last 12 months, the team played the finals of three ICC tournaments. In two of them, they had to face defeat, while the team won one.
Meanwhile, Ganguly also talked about the next IPL season. He said, “I am planning for the next IPL. I want DC to win this time. I will talk to the management to appoint an Indian as the head coach.”
