India’s white-ball vice-captain Shubman Gill is likely to be rested for the three-match T20 series against Bangladesh. The series will start on Sunday, October 6 in Gwalior. Gill, who is an integral part of the Indian Test team, may be rested as part of workload management. According to media reports, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah are set to be rested.
Gill, who bats at number three for India in Test matches, is an important player in the team’s top order along with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal and is expected to play all 10 Tests this season. In such a situation, the doors of Team India can open for Ishan Kishan, who has been trying to make a comeback in the Indian team for a long time. According to media reports, if Pant does not play the upcoming T20 series, then Kishan’s return is almost certain.
Shubman Gill will be rested from T20 series against Bangladesh
Hindustan Times quoted a BCCI source on the condition of anonymity as saying, “Yes, Shubman will be rested for the T20 International series against Bangladesh. If you look at the list of matches, three T20 Internationals will be played on October 7 (Gwalior), October 10 (Delhi) and October 13 (Hyderabad). Now the first Test against New Zealand will start from October 16.
He further said, “So it is important to give Gill rest because of the gap of just three days.” Gill has played 21 T20 Internationals so far and has one century and three half-centuries to his name. He has scored runs at a strike rate of around 140. He was recently appointed captain for the five-match T20 International series against Zimbabwe in Harare which India won 4-1.
Now it will be interesting to see whether Rishabh Pant plays the T20 International against Bangladesh or not as his workload is of paramount importance to the selectors and he is needed in longer formats. If Pant is rested, then Ishan Kishan’s name can once again be considered after being out of international cricket for nine months this year. Ishan Kishan recently scored a century in the Duleep Trophy.
