New Zealand have slipped to fourth place in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table after losing the series opener by 63 runs.
The first test match of the two-match test series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand has ended, which Sri Lanka won by 63 runs and has taken a 1-0 lead in the series. Chasing the target of 275 runs, New Zealand collapsed at 211 runs.

Sri Lanka first innings
Sri Lanka, who came to bat after winning the toss, were all out for 305 runs in 91.5 overs. Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Mendis batted brilliantly. While Kusal Mendis scored 50 runs in 68 balls, Kamindu Mendis scored a century of 114 runs in 173 balls. For New Zealand, William O’Rourke took the maximum of 5 wickets, followed by Ajaz Patel and Glenn Phillips taking 2-2 wickets and Tim Southee taking 1 wicket.
New Zealand first innings
New Zealand’s team was all out for 340 runs in 90.5 overs. Tom Latham scored 70 runs, Kane Williamson scored 55 runs, Daryl Mitchell scored 57 and Glenn Phillips scored an unbeaten 49 runs for the team. On the other hand, Prabhat Jayasuriya took 4 wickets, R Mendis took 3 and Dhananjay de Silva took 2 wickets for Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s second innings
In the second innings, the Sri Lankan team was all out after scoring 309 runs in 94.2 overs. Dimuth Karunaratne made a significant contribution to the team by scoring 83 runs, Dinesh Chandimal 61 and Angelo Mathews 50 runs. For New Zealand, William O’Rourke took 3 wickets and Ajaz Patel took the maximum of 6 wickets.
New Zealand’s second innings
New Zealand could not do much in the second innings. Rachin Ravindra played an innings of 92 runs and no other batsman was able to score even 40 runs. Prabhat Jayasuriya took the maximum of 5 wickets and Ramesh Mendis took 3 wickets to restrict New Zealand to 211 runs and won by 63 runs.
