ICC T20 World Cup 2007 Recap: Rules of T20 World Cup 2007-
- During the group stage and Super-8 matches, the team that wins the match will get 2 points, if the match is cancelled then both teams will get 1 point each and in case of defeat, they will get zero points.
- If the match is tied (i.e., both teams score exactly the same number of runs at the end of their innings) then the winner was decided by a bowl-out.
T20 World Cup 2007 Recap: Group Stage
T20 World Cup 2007 Group A consisted of South Africa, Bangladesh, and West Indies.
Group B- Australia, England and Zimbabwe
Group C- Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Kenya
Group D- India, Pakistan and Scotland
At the end of the group stage round, the top-2 teams in each of the four groups reached the Super-8. However, let us tell you that the teams for the Super-8 round were decided before the tournament began. After the group stage, the same two teams from each group reached the Super-8, but there was some change in Group-A. South Africa and West Indies from Group-A were part of the Super-8.
But Bangladesh won one out of two matches in the group stage and secured second place in the points table with two points. On the other hand, West Indies could not win any of the two matches. Due to which South Africa (4 points) and Bangladesh (2 points) reached the Super-8.
Yuvraj Singh hit 6 sixes against Stuart Broad in the Super-8 round match
In the match against England in the T20 World Cup 2007 Super-8 round, Yuvraj Singh hit 6 consecutive sixes in an over against Stuart Broad. There were only 20 balls left in the innings when Yuvraj came to bat. In the 19th over bowled by Stuart Broad, Yuvraj Singh hit 6 sixes and scored 36 runs. He scored a half-century in just 12 balls and became the fastest batsman to score a half-century in the T20 format.
T20 World Cup 2007 Recap: super-8
In the Super-8 round, 8 teams were divided into two groups (E and F) of four teams each. Group-E had India, New Zealand, South Africa and England. Group-F had Pakistan, Australia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
India (4 points) and New Zealand (4 points) from Group E and Pakistan (6 points) and Australia (4 points) from Group F reached the semi-finals.
Status of semi-final matches
The first semi-final match of the T20 World Cup 2007 was played between New Zealand and Pakistan in Cape Town. Pakistan made it to the finals by defeating New Zealand by 6 wickets. The Kiwi team batted first and scored 143 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. In response, Pakistan chased the target in just 18.5 overs.
The second semi-final was played between India and Australia in Durban. India won by 15 runs and secured a place in the final. Batting first, India scored 188 runs at the loss of 5 wickets. Australia, while chasing the target, could only score 173 runs at the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs.
Gautam Gambhir showed his flair in the final
The final match of the T20 World Cup 2007 was played between India and Pakistan on 24 September in Johannesburg. India won the tournament’s first title by winning by 5 runs. Team India batted first and scored 157 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Both Yuvraj Singh and captain MS Dhoni failed in the final.
Gautam Gambhir scored 75 runs in 54 balls to take the team to a respectable total. Chasing the target, Pakistan was all out for 152 runs in 19.3 overs. Irfan Pathan and RP Singh took 3-3 wickets. Joginder Sharma took two wickets.
Highest run and wicket taker in T20 World Cup 2007
Australian player Matthew Hayden was the highest run scorer in the T20 World Cup 2007. Hayden scored 265 runs in 6 matches at an average of 88.33 and a strike rate of 144.80. Indian player Gautam Gambhir was second on the list with 227 runs in 7 matches.
Pakistani player Umar Gul was the highest wicket-taker in the tournament. He took 13 wickets in 7 matches at an economy of 5.60.
