It is not a bad idea to hold a Test Championship. It is something to look forward to, but it is up to the board to decide- Amol Majumdar
The Indian women’s cricket team recently played a three-match ODI series with South Africa at home, which the team won 3-0. After the ODI series, Team India is ready to play a one-off Test match against South Africa. Before this Test match, Indian women’s team head coach Amol Majumdar has made a big statement. The head coach believes that Test championships should be played in women’s cricket as well. He praised the team’s excellent performance, but at the same time also talked about improvements in every department.
The demands of the test format are different- Amol Majumdar
The Indian women’s cricket team played the last Test match against England and Australia in December 2023, the team registered historic victories in both the matches. At the same time, the team has won the T20 and ODI series at home against Bangladesh and South Africa before the upcoming Test match against South Africa, the team is currently in great form.
Speaking on ESPNcricinfo ahead of the only Test match against South Africa, Amol Majumdar said,
We have the rhythm – we won in Bangladesh, we won against South Africa. They are different formats, but at the same time, we are trying to focus on every game. The demands (of playing Tests) are different. I think the team is ready for it and I think all three departments – batting, bowling and fielding, and fitness have to improve further.
Highlighting the demands of modern cricket, Amol Majumdar said that players are ready and eager to move to the multi-day format. She cited the Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy in March-April as good preparation, indicating a commitment to red-ball cricket alongside limited-overs formats. And Head is also content with getting only five days to prepare for the one-off Test match against South Africa after the ODI series.
Having a Test championship would be good for women’s cricket: Majumdar
Amol Majumdar further stressed that he has no objection to the Women’s World Test Championship like the men’s. He concluded his conversation with ESPNcricinfo by saying,
It is not a bad idea to hold a Test Championship. It is something to look forward to, but it is up to the board to decide. And if it happens, it is even better for the game. Test cricket is always special. We want to maintain it. Every game is important, be it ODI, T20 or Test match
