Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has questioned the absence of senior Indian players Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara as well as Sanju Samson and Rinku Singh from the four Duleep Trophy teams. He said that if Pujara was a contender for a place in the Test team, he could have proved to be an important batsman for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Senior star cricketers including captain Rohit Sharma, key batsman Virat Kohli, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and key spinner Ravichandran Ashwin have been rested from the Duleep Trophy. While Pujara and Rahane have been dropped from the team, Samson and Rinku Singh did not find a place in any of the four teams selected for the Duleep Trophy. Basit Ali said that he was surprised by the non-selection of some big names.
Basit Ali gave a surprising statement about Cheteshwar Pujara
Baris Ali said on his YouTube channel, “I saw the teams and I was surprised that 3-4 names are not in it. Ajinkya Rahane is not there. Cheteshwar Pujara is not there. Sanju Samson is not there. Rinku Singh is not there. Shivam Dubey has been selected. I think he is being prepared as an all-rounder. Let’s see who performs well in the Duleep Trophy.”
He further added, “Pujara could have proved useful in Australia. I am surprised that he is not there despite Gautam Gambhir being there (as India’s coach). Even Rinku Singh is not in the squad. Again, keeping Gambhir in mind, it is quite surprising.”
Let us tell you that apart from young Shubman Gill, players like Rituraj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer and Abhimanyu Easwaran have been given the responsibility of captaincy in the teams for Duleep Trophy 2024. Let us tell you that the first match of this tournament will be played on 5 September.
