The names of Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rituraj Gaikwad are coming up as openers for the Sri Lanka series.
A five-match T20 series was organized between India and Zimbabwe. The last match of this series was played on Sunday (14 July). In this match held at Harare Sports Club, the Indian cricket team won by 42 runs and with this, Team India under the captaincy of Shubman Gill has won the series against Zimbabwe by 4-1.
After the series win, Shubman Gill naturally looked very excited. Actually, This series proved to be a comeback for Shubman Gill after not getting a place in the T20 World Cup team due to poor form. He captained brilliantly and his batting form also returned. After the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill’s innings as captain and opener was commendable.
Big question about opening in Team India
However, in this series we saw many contenders for the opening spot. Whoever got the chance took advantage of it with both hands and now has created a problem for the BCCI.
First Abhishek Sharma, then Yashasvi Jaiswal both batted brilliantly as openers. After that there was Rituraj Gaikwad who may not have opened but his old records definitely tell what level of opener he is.
Now the question will arise as to who should be given the opening and who should not. Because the names of Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rituraj Gaikwad have come up for the upcoming series. All this headache will now fall on the coach and the captain to be appointed for the Sri Lanka series.
Shubman Gill has issued a statement regarding this increasing competition in the team. He said-
“The best thing is that everyone is performing. It shows that no one is taking things lightly and everyone is serious about their form and performance. This is the best thing for any country and board.”
“Whoever got the opportunity grabbed it with both hands. From openers to bowlers, all-rounders and spinners, everyone made their mark and I think the selectors have seen everything now and it is up to them to select the team for the next series (3 T20s and 3 ODIs in Sri Lanka).”
