Once upon a time, Aakash Chopra and Gautam Gambhir used to open for the Delhi team in domestic cricket. But after retiring from cricket, both of them are now seen in different roles. While Aakash Chopra is seen doing commentary, Gautam Gambhir is currently the head coach of the Indian cricket team.

Aakash Chopra’s international career was quite short. However, during a discussion, he shared an interesting anecdote related to Gautam Gambhir. Chopra talked about the personality of the Indian team’s head coach as well as some aspects that he lacked.

To be honest, he was not a friend- Aakash Chopra

“We (Gambhir and I) were competitive because we were fighting for a spot. We had a very good team. When we were playing, either (Virat) Kohli or (Shikhar) Dhawan would get to play. In fact, there was no place for Veeru (Virender Sehwag) to open. Veeru batted at number four so that we could play one of Shikhar and Virat at number three,” the former cricketer said on the Figuring Out podcast hosted by Raj Shamani.

We were competitors in the beginning. To be honest, he was not a friend. But he was a very passionate, very hardworking and very serious person about his skills. He scored a lot of runs. He always followed his heart. He was very emotional and very short tempered.

Chopra continued, “He is a good-hearted person. Comes from a very affluent family. For a kid like that to have that kind of passion…he would be on the field all day. He was born with a golden spoon, not even a silver one. It is a different journey, like Abhinav Bindra. Gautam has a very clean heart.”

Let us tell you that Gautam Gambhir won his first series as the Indian head coach, which was the T20 series against Sri Lanka. However, after this the Indian team had to face defeat in the ODI series.
