The second semi-final match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 was played between New Zealand Women and West Indies Women on 18 October. The New Zealand team, batting first in the match, had scored 128 runs. While chasing the target of 129 runs, West Indies team could score only 120 runs after losing 8 wickets.

New Zealand won by 8 runs and made it to the finals after 14 years. The team had earlier reached the finals in 2009 and 2010, but could not win the trophy both the times. West Indies captain Hayley Matthews broke down badly after the defeat in the semi-finals. She was seen crying, the video of which is going viral.

We were successful in proving a lot of people wrong – Haley Mathews

Speaking at the post match presentation after the defeat against New Zealand in the semi-finals, Hayley Matthews said that the result is disappointing, but she is very proud of her team because they were successful in proving a lot of people wrong.

This is disappointing for the entire team. I am very proud of all the team members. We saw players who didn’t play much in this World Cup and I think as a group we came together and exceeded expectations. We were successful in proving a lot of people wrong.

Haley Matthews praised Deandra Dottin. He took four wickets for 22 runs in the first four overs spell. Then played an inning of 33 runs in 22 balls, which included 3 sixes.

It seemed as if it could never slip out of our hands. The game changed after a few boundaries and it showed when Deandra hit some shots at midwicket. Unfortunately, she was out after that. He played brilliantly with the ball first and then made sure we got opportunities with the bat as well.
