In an important match played today in WPL 2024, Gujarat Giants defeated UP Warriors by 8 runs. With this victory, Gujarat has kept itself in the race for the playoffs. Batting first, Gujarat set a target of 153 runs for UP thanks to Beth Mooney’s innings of 74* runs. Chasing this, the UP team could score only 144 runs in the stipulated overs. Deepti Sharma played an excellent inning of 88* runs for UP, but it was not enough to win.

Earlier, after winning the toss and coming to bat first, Gujarat Giants had a great start and openers Laura Wolvaardt and Beth Mooney made a partnership of 60 runs for the first wicket. However, as soon as Laura was out, the middle order batting order faltered badly.

Wolvaardt played an important inning of 43 runs in 30 balls with the help of 8 fours and one six. After the fall of the first wicket, Gujarat lost wickets at regular intervals. But from one end, Captain Beth Mooney stood firm. She remained unbeaten till the end and played an excellent innings for the team, due to which Gujarat Giants scored a total of 152 runs.

Mooney scored unbeaten 74 runs in 52 balls, which included 10 fours and a six. Let us tell you that she hit five fours against Sophie Ecclestone in the 20th over of the innings.

Half the team returned to the pavilion on the score of 35.

UP Warriors, who set out to chase the target of 153 runs, did not get the start they needed. In the very first over, Shabnam Shakeel sent Alyssa Healy (4) on the fourth ball and then Chamari Atapattu on the sixth ball without opening the account. After this, Kiran Navgire (0) was out cheaply in the second over, while Grace Harris (1) was out cheaply in the fourth over.

In just 7 overs, half of the UP Warriors team returned to the pavilion with a score of 35. However, after this Deepti Sharma and Poonam Khemnar took charge. Both the batsmen batted intelligently and formed a valuable partnership and took the team’s score beyond 100.

Both these batsmen displayed amazing batting and made a partnership of 109* runs, bringing the team closer to victory. But the team could score only 144 runs for 5 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs.

Deepti Sharma’s half-century innings went in vain

Deepti Sharma was seen struggling alone for UP. He scored unbeaten 88 runs in 60 balls with the help of 9 fours and 4 sixes, but it was not enough for the team to win. Poonam Khemnar fully supported Deepti. He played an unbeaten inning of 36 runs in 36 balls.
