The much-awaited second season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is set to begin on February 23. The first match of the tournament will be played between the two finalists of the inaugural edition. Defending champions Mumbai Indians will take on last year’s runners-up Delhi Capitals at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
This match will start at 7.30 pm (IST). According to the schedule prepared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Royal Challengers Bangalore will face UP Warriors in the second match. After the eliminator on March 15, the summit clash will be played on March 17. Both the matches will be held in Delhi.
A total of 24 matches will be played in WPL 2024
A total of 22 matches will be played in WPL 2024 and all of them will start at 7:30 PM. Like the last season in 2023, there will be no home-away format, something that fans are used to seeing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The first season was held on three grounds in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Meanwhile, the upcoming season will be held in Delhi and Bengaluru.
The format of WPL 2024 will be the same as the last season. After the completion of the round-robin stage, the top three teams will advance to the playoffs. The team that tops the points table after the league stage will get direct entry into the finals. The second and third placed teams will face off in the eliminator on March 15.
Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians won the title last season by defeating Delhi Capitals by seven wickets at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Meg Lanning, who captained the Capitals, was the top run-scorer in the tournament with 345 runs in nine matches at an average of 49.29 and strike rate of 139.11. Hayley Mathews, representing Mumbai Indians, won the Purple Cap by taking 16 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 12.62 and an economy rate of 5.94.
