Senior India player Ravichandran Ashwin commented on the consequences of sending Kohli to bat at number three.
Virat Kohli: Virat Kohli, known as India’s best batsman across formats, had a chance to return as an opener in the World Cup thanks to a successful season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. But unfortunately the run-machine Kohli is yet to make the big breakthrough in the T20 World Cup after a record-breaking season in the IPL.
In recent matches against Ireland, Pakistan and USA, Kohli has scored only 1, 4 and zero runs respectively. That is why there is a demand to make some changes in the Indian team’s lineup and send Kohli to the third position. India will face Afghanistan in the first Super 8 match of the ICC T20 World Cup. Earlier, senior Indian player Ravichandran Ashwin had commented on the results of sending Kohli to bat at number three.
Will a player like Virat Kohli lose confidence?
With Kohli struggling to score runs as an opener, India could make changes to their line-up for the match against Afghanistan by either bringing Rishabh Pant up or fielding Yashasvi Jaiswal. In both scenarios, Kohli would be forced to play at his preferred batting position of number three.
Commenting on this on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said that “It is not possible for a player like Virat Kohli to lose his confidence. Rather he will say, ‘You brought me at number three, I will show you who I am. I am saying this because I know him.’
In a discussion with Ashwin, Robin Uthappa also agreed and said, “Virat Kohli’s walk, speech and behaviour exude confidence. I have seen glimpses of him on the field occasionally, talking to the players, discussing with the support staff, it shows that this man has tremendous confidence. He knows his game and potential.”
