Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian cricket team replacing Rahul Dravid. Dravid parted ways with Team India after the victory in the T20 World Cup 2024. The BCCI has handed Gambhir a five-year contract where the former KKR captain will lead the team in five ICC tournaments including ICC Champions Trophy 2025, T20 World Cup 2026, ODI World Cup 2027 and WTC 2025-2027.
Meanwhile, Gambhir has reportedly asked the BCCI to sign Abhishek Nayar as assistant coach, while he has named Vinay Kumar for bowling coach. While the BCCI reportedly has no objection to Abhishek Nayar joining Team India’s support staff, Vinay Kumar is unlikely to be included.
BCCI wants to appoint Zaheer Khan as bowling coach
“The BCCI is discussing the names of Zaheer Khan and Lakshmipathy Balaji for the position of bowling coach. The BCCI is not interested in Vinay Kumar,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Meanwhile, Jonty Rhodes is the favourite to take up the role of fielding coach. However, a Cricbuzz report also states that T Dilip’s contract may be renewed. The board will soon invite applications and a decision will be taken within the next 10 days as all the support staff will be part of the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.
